The biggest full moon of 2012 will happen this weekend!
It's a stargazers delight when Earth's closest celestial neighbour will appear to loom larger and brighter than usual on Saturday night, as astronomers anticipate a cosmic event called an "extreme supermoon".
A super moon is bigger and brighter than an ordinary full moon. The reason: the moon’s orbit around the Earth is elliptical, not round. And so when the elliptical path passes closest to Earth — as will be the case Saturday night, a full moon becomes 14 per cent wider and 30 per cent brighter than an average full moon.
And if it's true what they say about the association between a full moon and strange behaviour, Saturday evening could prove to be an interesting night.
Best time to view this super moon is at sunset when it's huge and orange in colour. Let's hope we have clear skies!
And if your dog is howling, your cat has its back up and the baby is crying, it's safe to say 'must be the full moon'!
